Pattaya Living and Lifestyle

A Little History

Pattaya started out as a small fishing village.  In the 1960s, during the Vietnam War, soldiers would take their relaxation in the quaint village, bringing tourist dollars to the area.  The little town began to grow and today is a thriving city with over 100,000 occupants.  At any time during the year, it is estimated there are 500,000 people in the city during the days.  The vast difference in population numbers is due largely to the fact that people commute into Pattaya for work daily from other cities.

Living Expenses

Pattaya living is known to be much less expensive than living in larger cities such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Koh Tao.  In addition to local comparisons, Pattaya is also much cheaper than European or Western cultures as well.  Walking down almost any street in Pattaya, you can find cheap and delicious Thai food.  A meal will cost around 30 baht, which is about $1 USD.  A person can live in an apartment, with little extras on around $500 USD per month.  If you had income of $1,600 per month, you could live very well in Pattaya.

There are many jobs to be had in the area as well as business opportunities in Pattaya and neighboring cities like Bangkok.  Transportation is also plentiful for city or commuting purposes with options available for road, rail, bus, taxi, or air travel.

Climate

Pattaya is warm most of the year.  Its climate is wet and dry throughout the year.  During November through February, the weather is warm and dry with temperatures ranging from 70 to 90 degrees.  March through May, the weather heats up and temperatures can range from 80 to 95 degrees or so.  June through October brings hot but rainy weather with temperatures again ranging from 70 to 90 degrees.  It is never very cold in Pattaya and surrounding areas, making it perfect for relaxing and enjoying the warmth.

Things to Do

Largely tourist friendly, Pattaya is full of foreigner-friendly amenities.  The relaxed atmosphere makes you feel right at home.  Any need you desire is offered in Pattaya, whether it is a comfortable condo for your long term stay, or business services or outdoor activities, it is available in Pattaya.

Upscale markets offer top of the line groceries.  There are many shopping malls and boutiques that carry both local and foreign merchandise.  Bars and lounges abound for relaxing, listening to live music and enjoying wine or spirits with your fine Thai or Western style foods.  Just about anything you want can be found.

Pattaya is also a very art conscious area.  Many art galleries can be found in the streets of beautiful Pattaya.  There are also thespian groups, festivals and events, and other activities to do.  There is something for everyone here.  Take a 30 minute ride underwater in a working submarine, visit Elephant Village where trained elephants perform, or visit the legendary Wat Khao Phra Bat temple which features a statue of Buddha over 18 meters high overlooking Pattaya Bay.

Enjoy the rich culture and beauty of Pattaya and make it your home away from home.
